1. Acceptance of Terms
By downloading, installing, or using Buteo ("the App"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the App.
2. License Grant
We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App on any Apple device that you own or control, subject to these Terms and the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.
The App is intended for personal, non-commercial outdoor recreation and scouting use. You may not redistribute, sublicense, reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the App.
3. User Responsibilities
You agree to:
- Use the App in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, including wildlife, hunting, and land use regulations.
- Obtain any required permits, licenses, or permissions before accessing private land or engaging in hunting or scouting activities.
- Not use the App for any unlawful, harassing, or harmful purpose.
4. Backcountry Safety Disclaimer
⚠️ Important Safety Notice: Electronic devices — including smartphones running Buteo — can fail, run out of battery, or lose GPS signal lock in dense forest canopy, steep canyons, or extreme weather conditions.
You must always carry redundant navigation tools, including paper topographic maps and an analog magnetic compass, when navigating remote backcountry wilderness. Never rely solely on any electronic device for navigation in areas where getting lost could endanger your safety.
Buteo is a supplementary navigation and record-keeping tool. It is not a replacement for proper backcountry preparedness, survival skills, or emergency communication devices (e.g., satellite messengers, personal locator beacons).
5. GPS & Battery Disclaimer
Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. Buteo records location data in the background to maintain route tracking while the device screen is locked or the App is minimized. Plan your battery usage accordingly when using the App on extended trips.
6. Accuracy & Reliability
Buteo relies on the GPS hardware and sensors built into your device, as well as third-party map tile and weather data providers. We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of:
- GPS coordinates, elevation readings, or distance calculations.
- Weather forecasts, barometric pressure, or wind data.
- Map imagery, terrain elevation models, or trail data.
- Compass headings or device sensor readings.
All data presented by the App should be verified independently using authoritative sources before making safety-critical decisions.
7. Third-Party Services
Buteo uses third-party services for map rendering (Mapbox) and weather data (Open-Meteo). These services have their own terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or content provided by these services.
8. Intellectual Property
The App, including its design, code, graphics, logos, and content, is the intellectual property of the Buteo developer and is protected by applicable copyright and trademark laws. The Buteo name and hawk logo are trademarks of their respective owner.
9. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall the developer of Buteo be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to:
- Personal injury or property damage arising from the use of the App.
- Loss of data, scouting records, or photos.
- Reliance on GPS data, weather forecasts, or map information provided by the App.
- Inability to use the App due to device failure, battery depletion, or loss of GPS signal in remote locations.
You use the App at your own risk. The App is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied.
10. Termination
We reserve the right to terminate or suspend your access to the App at any time, without prior notice, for conduct that we believe violates these Terms or is otherwise harmful to other users or third parties.
11. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
12. Governing Law
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United States, without regard to conflict of law principles.
