Open the CONFIG dashboard button, then tap "Download Trip Area" (the cloud download icon). Position the map over the area you want to cache, then tap Download. Buteo will save satellite imagery, topographic contours, 3D terrain, and a 48-hour weather forecast for that region. You can download multiple areas and manage them in the Settings view under "Offline Map Packs."
When you start a scouting session by tapping TRACKER, Buteo begins recording your GPS location. If you lock your screen or switch to another app, background location tracking continues — your route keeps recording. You'll see a blue location indicator in the status bar. When you return to the App, your full track will be displayed on the map. Note that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
Import: Open the CONFIG menu and tap "Import GPX File". Select a .gpx file from your device. Buteo will automatically clean up GPS anomalies, assign a smart name, and enrich the route with historical weather data.
Export: Open any session from the SESSIONS list, then tap the share button. You can export as a standard .gpx file (compatible with onX Hunt, Gaia GPS, and others) or as a full ZIP bundle including route data, photos, and weather metadata.
Buteo retrieves weather forecasts from the Open-Meteo API, a free open-source weather service. Data includes temperature, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, humidity, and precipitation. When you download an offline map pack, a 48-hour weather forecast for that area is cached locally so you have weather data even without cell service.
No. All of your scouting data — tracks, waypoints, photos, and weather snapshots — is stored exclusively on your device in a private database. Buteo does not have user accounts, does not upload your data to any server, and does not share your information with third parties. Read our full Privacy Policy for details.
A few tips to extend battery during extended trips:
- Download offline map packs before your trip to avoid constant tile downloads.
- Reduce screen brightness and enable auto-lock.
- Use a longer capture interval (e.g. 30 seconds instead of 5) if auto-capture is enabled.
- Carry a portable battery pack on multi-day outings.
Background GPS tracking does consume battery. Plan accordingly for trips longer than 6–8 hours.
You can delete individual sessions from the SESSIONS view by swiping or tapping the delete option. To remove all data, simply uninstall the App. Since all data is stored locally on your device, uninstalling permanently deletes everything.
